French Foreign Ministry’s religious adviser discusses Orthodox-Catholic relations with DECR vice-chairman

Hegumen Philip Riabykh, DECR vice-chairman, met on 23 March 2010 with Mr. Olivier Poupard, French Foreign Ministry religious adviser. Participating in the talk were also Mr. A. Giorgini, second counselor of the French Embassy in Russia, and Mr. Matiyashin of the DECR secretariat for the far-abroad countries.
The visiting delegation showed a special interest in relations between the Russian Orthodox and the Roman Catholic Churches in the canonical territory of the Moscow Patriarchate and in international arena.
Father Philip informed Mr. Poupard about the present international activity of the Moscow Patriarchate, with special attention to prospects for inter-cultural dialogue in Europe and in UNESCO.
Mr. Poupard stressed the importance of religions’ active involvement in building peaceful co-existence and cooperation between various faiths and nationalities. He also noted that cooperation between the state, civil society and religious communities was necessary for solving many socially significant problems.
